On Friday, 23rd May, our 6th class students set off on an exciting educational adventure to Spike Island, located in the heart of Cork Harbour. The trip was a fantastic opportunity to explore elements of both History and Geography, all while soaking in the beautiful surroundings of one of Ireland’s most fascinating heritage sites.
Our day began with a scenic ferry ride across the harbour – a highlight for many of the pupils! There was lots of excitement as we approached the island, with students eager to discover more about its rich past.
Once on the island, we took part in a guided tour where students learned about the island’s incredible history – from its beginnings as a monastic settlement, through its time as a fortress and prison, right up to its modern-day role as a major tourist attraction. We also explored the island’s strategic position in Cork Harbour and discussed how geography has shaped its unique role over time.
In the afternoon, students got active with an orienteering challenge as part of our PE curriculum. Using maps and teamwork, they navigated their way around the island, combining physical activity with practical skills in navigation and geography.
The sun shone, the spirits were high, and the learning was hands-on and memorable. It was a brilliant day full of discovery, activity, and fun. The ferry ride back gave everyone a chance to reflect on all they had experienced – and maybe plan a return visit!
A big thank you to all staff and guides who made the trip possible. Well done, 6th class – you represented our school proudly and showed great enthusiasm throughout the day!
