Sciath na Scol Camogie Champions

Bunscoil Rinn an Chabhlaigh’s camogie team travelled to CIT last Friday to contest the C2 Sciath na Scol final against local rivals Carrigtwohill. The girls arrived focused and they were determined to become the first camogie Sciath na Scol winners in Bunscoil Rinn an Chabhlaigh history.

Both teams started with a similar priority; don’t let the other team score! They both battled hard and Bunscoil were unlucky not to go a point up early on in the game when an Eimear Diggin free went inches wide of the post. Solid defending all over the pitch ensured no goals were conceded before half time. Carrigtwohill however managed to score a point and went in a point up at half time.

It was a game of 2 halves. Bunscoil came out for the second half with fire in their bellies. From the throw in the Carrigtwohill attack laid siege to the Bunscoil goal but superb defending from Ellie Mackessy, Lucy Coughlan, Brianna Donovan, Eve Ahern, Eimear Diggin and Darcy Mc Keown along with an inspirational save from Salimat Abdulraheem ensured that Carrigtohill left with nothing. Eimear Diggin’s puck out almost reached the forward line and with the help of Caoimhe Gilmartin, Molly O’ Keeffe, Davina Kramer, Róisín Mc Carthy and Caitlin Farrell an on form Aimee McKeown was not going to miss the opportunity that presented to put Bunscoil a goal up!

The team came to life after the first goal and the endless running of midfielders Amy Duggan and Vanessa Frawley proved difficult for Carrigtwohill to stop. This meant their defence was exposed and it allowed Amy to tap over a point from close range. With the girls continuing to find holes in the Carrigtwohill defence another goal was soon to come, this time scored by Vanessa Frawley. Once again pure determination ensured the ball was going nowhere but the back of the net.

Carrigtwohill did not give up and continued to put pressure on the Bunscoil defence which Amy Ryan and Brooke Hurley had now joined. Super saves, goal line clearances and putting their bodies on the line showed that the girls did not intend on conceding any goals.

At the other end Caoimhe Fitzgerald, Lauren Ryan, and Amy Meacle joined the action and once again Vanessa Frawley found the back of the net, this time capitalising on an Eimear Diggin free.

Screams of sheer jubilation were heard on the final whistle. Well done to all the girls on doing their school so proud and becoming the first camogie team to return with a Sciath na Scol cup!! Mo Chumas Abú!
