Here in Bunscoil Rinn an Chablaigh in 4TH Class, we had to interview some of our grandparents to lrearn about life in the 1950’s.

We had eight grandparents in to help us .They gave us great stories about the old days and they were very enthusiastic.

For example, here’s a bit from Phil – she was born in the 1930’s. She had 12 in her family. She liked playing cards and ring toss and she loved toffee.

The grandparents’ names were Leoni, Phil, Terry, Rose, Marian, Phil, Trish and Silvia. Life in the 1950s was very different. The two main types of cars were: Ford Cortina and Volkswagen Beetle.

The fastest mode of transport was train. Women did all the house work when men did the factory work. Bicycle were also very popular. The first spacecraft was launched in the 1950`s. It was called Sputnik One from the Soviet Union.

Fashion was very different – men wore suits and women wore dresses. Girls also wore dresses and boys wore shorts and shirts. They were only allowed baths once a week (if they were lucky) and most of the grandparents left school at young ages.

We had lots of fun talking to them and I’m sure the grandparents did as well. We learned so much about life in the 1950’s thanks to the grandparents.
